Back To School Friend Wanted Ads

Hi There!  It’s Jillian from The Starr Spangled Planner.  The ladies of iTeachThird invited me here today to share one of my FAVORITE back-to-school activities with you:  Friend Wanted Ads!

Essentially, students write an advertisement sharing the qualities they look for in a friend.  This not only helps them think deeply about what they are searching for in a good friend, but what they, in turn, can offer their friend in that relationship.

This activity is perfect for helping students build new relationships at the beginning of the year.  The anonymity boosts confidence and allows students to approach new friendships without judgment!

I like to introduce this activity with a "friendship warm up."  We come together at meeting and I start with the question, "What is friendship?"  I write their responses down on chart paper (structured like the table above) so that we can refer back to it throughout our discussion, and throughout the year.

I then move on to the next three questions, allowing for 4 or 5 responses to each question.  Once we have laid the foundation for our conversation, I can begin to introduce the friendship advertisements.

I usually start with something like, "It can be hard to make new friends.  Some of you are new to our school.  You may be looking around at all new faces and wondering who you will call friend in a few days time.  Some of you are in this classroom, but your best friend is in another classroom.  You may be wondering how you are going to make it through this year without them.  Others may look around the classroom and see many familiar friends, but know that you can never have too many!"

I explain that, 'We are going to be doing an activity to get to know each other as friends.  The goal is that we will all be friends in this classroom, but I know that you may grow closer to some than others.  We are going to be writing advertisements to share what we are looking for in a new friend, and what kind of friend we think we can be for someone else."

At this point my students usually look at each other with a confused face... you gotta love getting that look from your WHOLE class!  I assure them it will be okay, because I have an example to share with them.

When I'm finished, you can see that the little light bulbs went off, and they have a solid understanding of what is being asked of them.  I make sure to answer a few lingering questions, and I set them off to writing!

When they have all finished, and they all feel confident in their ads, I type them out.  I do this so that it is TRULY anonymous (you know some handwriting is a dead giveaway!)  Then, I cover each name with a colorful piece of cardstock and tape it ONLY at the top.  This creates a little flap that allows the name to be unveiled.  That way, when I post all of these beautiful advertisements to my bulletin board, students can read the ads, and  lift the flaps of any that seem like a potential friend and find out who it is!  Exciting right?

This is truly one of my all time favorite activities... and sometimes I get upset that it's over by the second week of school.  I'm still working on ways to reinvent it throughout the year, so I welcome any ideas!

I hope you and your kiddos enjoy this activity as much as we do!  Thanks for stopping by, and thank you to the ladies of iTeachThird for having me!

  1. This is so great! Could they maybe advertise before a group project, "selling" their classmates on why they'd be good group members?

  4. Jillian, this is absolutely amazing! I am consistently in awe of your creativity. What a wonderful idea. This can be a tough age and there are some kids who really struggle to socialize and make friends, partly because they don't know how. You are so inspirational.

  10. Jillian! This seems like an amazing activity! I am adding it to my list of must-do lessons. I do have one question: What font did you use when you typed your descriptors? That makes the whole thing even more visually appealing (to my font-lover self, at least!) when you post it. Oh... Along with those above, I'd love to buy a template! (Maybe your next TpT addition?) Thanks for sharing this idea.

  24. This is a wonderful idea! I have something kind of similar although its about giving compliments to your classmates. During March I make pots of gold that my students decorate and their names are on them. There is a piece that is only glued along the edge so something can be slipped inside. Then throughout a few weeks of March we have 3 or 4 students we focus on and we write compliment coins to put in our pots of gold. My students love reading them all at the end of the month. One of my favorite activities.

  25. wow, I love the idea. I am Anka. I am a teacher from Poland and going to try this exercise during our class hour. In Poland children start school education when they are 6 and for three years have lessons with one teacher, then when they are 9 (year 4) for three years they learn with different teachers. They have a form tutor - a teacher who takes care of the class for those three years (year 4, 5, and 6th). I am the person :). My class is now in year 6th. The last in this school. They should know each other very well, but: they are changing each year and there are still children who are not liked, and I know they are great but just different. This project lets to realize them, that they all are valuable and all of them have faults, needs…

On the second meeting with parents in year 4th, I put on the colour pieces of paper adjectives describing the children. I wrote one POSITIVE adj for each child and told the parents to find on the greenboard the word describing their child. :) Lots of fun. Some find the word easily, some were surprised, and I was surprised with some also. :) I love sharing ideas and will be in touch. :) Anka

  26. This is fabulous and I was so excited to do this. This class I have isn't the kindest to each other... and struggled with the qualities of friendship. When I asked them to start writing their ad they had some blank looks. It was a bit hard for 3rd graders... or maybe this group of third graders! I made a template based on your sample. Hopefully they'll get the hang of it now! Thanks for sharing this great idea!!

  28. Jillian! This is awesome, so many uses. I would use this as a beginning of year activity, but also as an end of year activity too to remind kids that not only do they (and friends) grow and change, but also to keep friendships kindled over summer break. But best of all, I teach in a Catholic school - these would be perfect when introducing Saints or apostles, as written from their point of view (kind of a Who-Am-I? activity).

  29. Love it! I will use this in my 5th grade classroom!
I am in charge of team building in our school and am going to incorporate it into a "Team Wanted" ad too!!

  34. Hey! I think this is fab! I did an activity (in secondary school actually, when I was about 15/16, it still worked wonderfully well) where everyone in the class had an envelope with their name on, and we each had to write something nice about each person and put the compliments in the envelopes
Really nice memory and mood booster, we did it just before Christmas and then took them all home to open and I've still got mine today in a memory box :)

  36. To keep the ads going all year, you can suggest they also write ads looking for play dates, find another kid interested in chess or tennis and would like to practice on tuesday nights.
I'm not a teacher but I'm a mom of a very shy girl and I love your ad idea and even if she doesn't do it in her classroom I think it would be very good for her to do on her own so she figure out what kind of friends she's looking for.

  45. One simple twist would be to write from a teacher and student point of view to determine roles and expectations in the classroom..."I'm looking for a student who" and "I am looking for a teacher who"
The kids can work in pairs since this may be a bit daunting at the start of the year. Then, later it can evolve into the student ads you have above.
I really love your idea! So creative and filled with standards!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Could you wait longer for the reveal of who wrote what?
Have students read through advertisements and make notes of any characteristics they could offer...or maybe areas they could work on?
Later in the year you could remind them of some of the traits of being a good friend. You could have each student draw one name, and not tell anyone what name they picked. Then give them a week to be a 'secret friend' and do something nice for that person. (Which would encourage being giving...and be a friend to everyone).

  47. In the end writer should rearrange the entire essay the structure of its paragraphs, click academic writing companies to find more!

  48. You can also use this after reading a lot of stories. Students can write from the perspective of a character. Other students can walk around and guess which one is talking.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes, I think it's important for students. Especially relations in the team is what you need to learn for a long time. In the future, this is an important skill. I have long tried to find a common language with the classmate. But then my parents decided to give me an education at home. It was fortunate for me. But in college, I had a lot of problems. I skipped lessons from what had to be used 99 papers . After all, I didn't want the bad ratings. So work on the relationship!
